Since its founding in 2011, ESS has been focused on laying the groundwork for a future powered by clean and reliable energy.

ESS is developing an advanced, high-performance, low cost flow battery technology that uses earth-abundant iron as its energy storage medium. A flow battery is an easily rechargeable system that stores its electrolyte—the material that provides energy—as a liquid in external tanks. Users can tune the battery’s specifications to their specific needs.

The All-Iron Flow Battery (IFB) offers incomparable affordability for retail, industrial and utility-scale energy storage needs. The patented battery design reduces system costs by combining an extremely cost effective electrolyte with an innovative cell design. This dramatically increases power density and enables a smaller, less costly power stack.

The ESS energy management system allows customers to take advantage of increasingly prevalent Time-of-Use (TOU) costing, as it automatically charges electricity when prices are low, then discharges this energy on demand when prices are high. Even better, having energy stored on site allows businesses to continue operating through intermittent power outages.


With a non-toxic, non-hazardous, and completely recyclable iron-based electrolyte, the IFB is safe, reliable, and very environmentally friendly.

Use of flow batteries provides a cost and environmental benefit to the grid, as well. A reduction of peak load helps utilities avoid bringing on the most costly and carbon intensive sources of power to meet peak demand.

ESS is supported by a variety of partners who share their  vision. In 2012, ESS was awarded $1.73M from the Department of Energy’s ARPA-E program as well as $250,000 from the Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnologies Institute and $150,000 from Oregon BEST.
